I have seen old videos on Youtube, of this cowboy- i think he did used to light up. He moved quite a bit, in earlier days. Your photo of him came out very well, I have been to Las Vegas many times and understand how hard it is to take a decent photo of him nowadays, with the roof over his head and things blocking the view of him. Great shot ! I just have a special liking for him, for some reason.

Duane McCullough replied:

Thanks again Nancy -- apparently the Vegas Vic Neon Sign has quite a history. I googled the term and read the Wikipedia link and -- Wow, what a story!

The actual name of this sign, is Vegas Vic :) He used to talk and say " Howdy, Cowboy" loudly and repeatedly. Allegedly, one of the actors in town to film the original Ocean's 11 with the Rat Pack found the voice so annoying, he asked them to turn the sign off and it has been silent ever since.

Duane McCullough replied:

Thanks Nancy -- I did not know the image had a name. So, Vagas Vic used to talk... this image comes from Fremont Street where the whole overhead street roof lights up with a video. Taken in 2005 with a 2mg Musteck camera -- it came out pretty good after filtering. I bet his hand and cigar used to light up as well ;)

I am an artist that lives in Western North Carolina near the town of Brevard where my photographic artwork of local natural scenery has been availiable online at Fine Art America since 2012. Scenes of old barns & farm houses -- together with panoramic images of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Appalachian waterfalls, are just some of my artwork on exihibit. Many natural views of Western North Carolina throughout the four seasons can be found that include wonderful native flowering plants and local animals. As an artist with decades of commercial and fine art experience, I have applied my knowledge of composition and contrast to my artwork which has resulted in a wide range of inspirational views. Although most of my artwork is...
